Another Dome Update

As I suspected, this week is all about working on the fiberglass dome.  Last night was all about finishing the cut-outs and getting the pie panels etched so they looked appropriate.  I had some divine inspiration after etching the corners, and used a piece of sandpaper folded in half to smooth the edges and make it look really clean on both sides.

After getting the pie panels looking nice and clean, I moved on to the "magic panel" and the rear logic display cut outs.  The magic panel was the part that I was the most nervous about, because it has rounded edges on the cut out area.  At first the top was more of an arch than a rounded rectangle, and I think I need to work on the bottom sides a bit more, but I'm pretty happy overall with how it turned out.

I still have a fair amount of work to do on the dome before it's time to re-prime and paint it, but it's moving along rather nicely.  And I still can't resist lighting it from the inside...

More Dome Work

I've gotten to a point on the frame where I have a lot of questions that I need to get answered, so I've been focusing more on the dome right now.  I had a chance to get a hobby saw, some sandpaper and a dremel attachment for cutting out sections, so I had the materials to work with the dome more.  After spending some time cleaning up the edges from the casting, I started to work on the panels and cut outs.  After doing 1 pie panel I'm not sure this is going to turn out the way it's supposed to, so I may need to re-think what I'm up to on this front some.

That said, I'm glad to be working on something beyond the frame for a bit, and something outside of styrene.

A dome in the hand...

Thanks to Todd, I now have the dome for my R4 at the house.  It's made from a mold he had, and is fiberglass.  I still need to sand, detail and cut out sections of it before I can start painting, but it's just another part of the project.  I'm still on target to finish the first part of the frame by the end of the month.  I'm pretty confident I can have a stood up droid (legs, body, head) by Megacon.

Starting a new Blog

Originally I wanted to just have the blogging of my R4 be a part of my primary blog, but after starting out this way, I'm figuring that it's going to be easier to post up to a blog just for this singular purpose, to make posting up about it a lot easier.

That said, here's the first post, and hopefully many more in the near future!
